Pediatric Lumbar Spine Consultation & Treatment Planning
Clear, calm evaluation for children with lower back pain, leg symptoms, weakness, gait changes, abnormal spine imaging, tethered cord concerns, or a spine diagnosis that needs neurosurgical review.
This outpatient visit is for scheduled evaluation, imaging review, follow-up, and second opinions. Sudden neurologic changes, severe trauma, seizure emergencies, signs of stroke, or rapidly worsening symptoms should be directed to emergency care.
Who this visit is for
When a child’s back symptoms need a closer look.
Back pain in children is evaluated differently than back pain in adults. A pediatric spine consultation helps connect the child’s symptoms, neurologic exam, development, activity level, and imaging so the family can understand the likely cause and the next step.
Abnormal spine imaging
MRI, CT, X-ray, or ultrasound findings that need a neurosurgical explanation in language families can understand.
Gait or leg changes
Weakness, tripping, numbness, tingling, pain down the leg, or walking changes that may need neurologic evaluation.
Tethered cord concerns
Symptoms or imaging that raise concern for tethered cord, occult spinal dysraphism, spinal markers, or spina bifida history.
Second opinions
A family-friendly review when recommendations feel confusing, incomplete, or difficult to explain to a child.
What we are looking for
A scan is only one part of the story.
The visit reviews what imaging shows, what symptoms suggest, and what would make observation, follow-up, additional testing, therapy, or surgery appropriate. The goal is not to rush a child into an operation. The goal is to help the family understand the spine concern clearly.
How the consultation works
A warm visit with serious clinical review.
Families should leave knowing what was reviewed, what the most likely explanation is, what warning signs matter, and what the next step should be.
Listen first.
We start with the child’s symptoms, timeline, activity changes, and what the family has already been told.
Review the imaging.
We look at available MRI, CT, X-ray, ultrasound images, and reports in context.
Explain the finding.
We translate spine anatomy and risk into everyday language so parents and children understand the plan.
Choose the next step.
Monitoring, follow-up imaging, therapy coordination, additional testing, or surgery when appropriate.
Seek emergency care for rapidly worsening weakness, new bowel or bladder changes, severe trauma, signs of stroke, seizure emergencies, fever with severe back pain, or any sudden neurologic change. Bring MRI, CT, X-ray, ultrasound images if available, imaging reports, referral notes, prior surgical records, therapy notes, medication lists, and the questions your family wants answered.
